From pain and injury to a confident return to running
Running places repeated demands on the body, and pain can develop for many different reasons. Sometimes the problem follows a sudden injury; at other times symptoms build gradually as training volume, intensity, recovery, strength or movement demands change.
At Vitalis, Vic combines her background in clinical sports therapy and rehabilitation with her own running and strength-training experience. The aim is not simply to settle symptoms, but to understand what may be contributing to the problem and help you build towards running confidently again.
You do not need to be an elite runner. Support is suitable for beginners, recreational runners and people training for events as well as experienced runners.
Common running problems
- Knee pain associated with running
- Calf and Achilles problems
- Shin pain
- Hamstring problems
- Hip and glute pain
- Foot and ankle problems
- Muscle strains and recurring tightness
- Returning to running following injury or time away
Symptoms can have many causes. Your assessment helps determine the most appropriate next step and whether referral for medical assessment is advisable.
Understanding the runner, not just the painful area
Your first appointment starts with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, running history, recent training, previous injuries and what you want to return to.
Relevant movement, mobility and strength can then be assessed. Where appropriate, treatment may be combined with rehabilitation exercises rather than relying on hands-on therapy alone.
This assessment-led approach allows your plan to reflect your individual starting point. For some runners the priority may initially be reducing pain and restoring comfortable movement; for others it may be rebuilding capacity, strength and confidence before gradually increasing running again.
There is no one-size-fits-all programme. Progression is based on how you respond and what your running goals require.
Bridging the gap back to running
Depending on your assessment, your plan may include hands-on sports therapy, sports massage, mobility work and progressive rehabilitation exercises.
The Ringwood clinic also allows rehabilitation to progress into more substantial strength and exercise-based work where appropriate. This can help bridge the gap between an injury settling down and feeling genuinely ready to run, train or exercise again.
Your rehabilitation may include
- Strength and capacity work
- Mobility and movement exercises
- Calf, lower-limb and hip strengthening
- Balance and control exercises
- Progressive loading
- Return-to-running preparation
- Advice around a gradual return to activity
Sports therapy-led running rehabilitation
Vic holds a Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Clinical Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation, Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy and Level 3 Personal Training, alongside her own running and strength-training background.
That combination allows treatment, rehabilitation and progressive exercise to work together rather than feeling like separate stages.
